Security consultant Ron Bowles has used a code to scan Facebook and gather public data from 100 million Facebook users, including unique IDs, profile URL, and their name. The list was then put up to download on the Internet.

Facebook denies that the issue is one of privacy concerns, as the information gathered was public anyway and available on search engines such as Google and Bing. “No private data is available or has been compromised,” a Facebook statement said.

However, security analysts believe the actual issue is the fact that the information was easily scanned and collected. “It is inconceivable that a firm with hundreds of engineers couldn´t have imagined a trawl of this magnitude…”

The Library of Congress in the United States has announced that it has made the practice of “jailbreaking” your iPhone or other cell phone legal. Unlocking the phone means that consumers can use it on other networks, and also download freeware.

Apple tried to fight the legalisation of jailbreaking, a practice that under company rules had made the phone´s warranty invalid. It claimed unlocking the phone violated copyright. However the FCC argued that it increased inter-operability.

This then came under fair-use, and thus is legal.

Information technology experts are warning that unless action is taken we will run out of internet addresses – four number sequences that identify a device connected to the internet or a web site – within a year.

The current protocol, IPv4 allows for a maximum of 4 billion addresses. It was designed before personal computers and mobile phones became the norm and certainly before anyone anticipated that appliances such as fridges would one day be connected.

A replacement protocol, IPv6, is available but will be expensive to implement. ISPs and consumers will have to do significant software upgrades and in many cases replace hardware. Stop-gap solutions are likely to break many net applications.
