An investigation by the Associated Press has uncovered cases where viruses were responsible for putting child pornography on their computer, bankrupting people trying to prove it wasn’t of their doing and being branded as pedophiles.
Getting the verdict right can be difficult, as viruses are often used by real pedophiles as a defense. “It’s an example of the old ‘dog ate my homework’ excuse. The problem is, sometimes the dog does eat your homework,†said an expert in Internet law.
Sometimes other evidence like DVDs and e-mails break a virus defense, but forensics work that could prove innocence is often too expensive. A security expert said, “Just because it’s there doesn’t mean the person intended for it to be there.â€
Scientists at the University of California led by Professor Jack Gallant have successfully used a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner to extract what a person is seeing from their brainwaves.
The researchers fed videos and the scans of volunteers into a computer for correlations to be drawn. The volunteers were then shown a different video and the software was able to recreate the basic shape but not all details from brainwaves.
“At the moment when you see something and want to describe it you have to use words or draw it and it doesn’t work very well. This technology might allow you to recover an eyewitness’s memory of a crime,” said Professor Gallant.
