IBM  and the Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA), which supplies water to more than 600,000 people, have teamed up to address the pressing problem of water management in the heart of Northern California’s wine country. By bringing together and analyzing data including water usage and quality, weather and climate, and environmental considerations, IBM’s sophisticated water management system is helping SCWA make better decisions about resource allocation dynamically based on near real-time information. The system includes geographical and system map views so SCWA and its partner stakeholders can quickly identify and address specific issues such as low chlorine residual or low storage tank levels, in minutes rather than hours.

Warren Buffett, Bill Gates

Billionaires and philanthropists Bill Gates and Warren Buffet began a project last year at a dinner attended by the most wealthy Americans that urges fellow billionaires to pledge half their total wealth to charities.

Not satisfied with getting David Rockefeller, Oprah Winfrey and Michael Bloomburg on board, the pair are now systematically contacting the 400 richest people in the world as per Forbes and encouraging them to donate more.

Buffett, who has pledged 99% of his own wealth to charities, said that they are working on this project because “too often, a vast collection of possessions ends up possessing its owner.” Collectively, the 400 richest have US$1.2 trillion.
